The Second Spanish Republic (República Española) overthrew the monarchy and adopted a new flag on April 27, 1931. The horizontal tricolour had equal-sized stripes of red, yellow and murrey (a reddish-purple color). The coat of arms of the Second Spanish Republic was placed in the center.
The purple color in the flag of Spain is known as murrey – morado in Spanish.

The flag represented the democratic government of Spain which lasted about 8 years and was taken over by a military dictatorship in 1939.
