The Second Spanish Republic (República Española)overthrew the monarchy and adopted a new flag on April 27, 1931. The horizontal tricolour had equal-sized stripes of red, yellow and murrey (a reddish-purple color). The coat of arms of the Second Spanish Republic was placed in the center.
The purple murrey color is known as morado in Spanish.
The flag represented the democratic government of Spain which lasted about 8 years and was taken over by a military dictatorship in 1939.
