The Italian flag, known as il Tricolore, has three colors – green, white and red. They represent the country’s plains, the snow tops of the Alps and the blood shed during the independence and unification wars, respectively. However, a religious interpretation is also popular based on which the colors in the Bandiera d’Italia correspond to the three virtues of hope (green), white (faith) and red (charity).

The Pantone® codes of the colors were decided in 2006 and are 17-6153 TCX (Fern Green), 11-0601 TCX (Bright White) and 18-1662 TCX (Flame Scarlet). The hexadecimal, RGB and CMYK values are based on the PMS codes.

The flag was officially adopted on January 1, 1948.
